The majority of professional licensing in South Carolina is done by the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation’s (SCLLR) Division of Professional and Occupational Licensing. This SCLLR division oversees more than 40 licensing boards. Other professional licenses are handled by the South Carolina Bar and the Supreme Court of South Carolina’s Office of Bar Admissions.

Admission to the South Carolina Bar is first sought through the South Carolina Board of Law Examiners or, for limited licenses, the Clerk of the Supreme Court of South Carolina.
The Office of Bar Admissions of the Supreme Court of South Carolina is responsible for processing applications for admission to practice law in South Carolina. This includes regular admission under Rule 402 of the South Carolina Appellate Court Rules, limited certificates to practice law and pro hac vice applications.
